Live In The Cipher Cd Review: J. Cole - Cole World: The Sideline Story
In an era saturated with upstart MCs all vying for the coveted status of “next big thing”, the story of 24-year old North Carolina native J. Cole (born Jermaine Cole) is a refreshing exception to the quick route for fame and success. The first artist signed to Jay-Z’s new Roc Nation label, Cole made himself notable through a scholarly approach to the game – no small feat considering his Magna Cum Laude distinction upon graduating from St. John’s University.
If his sudden christening by JAY-Z shocked the haters, their doubts were quickly refuted when J. Cole dropped his recent mixtape The Warm Up, as well as a coveted guest verse on JAY-Z’s Blueprint 3 with “A Star is Born”. Soulful and strong, J. Cole’s lyrics touch on everything from his upbringing in North Carolina to the poverty and hopelessness that affect his community. The mixtape encapsulates not just who J. Cole is as a rapper, but who he is as an artist and a person.
Taking from his favorite artists a love for powerful storytelling with an intense inner-strength, J. Cole advanced to writing his own lyrics at 15, soon amassing stacks of notebooks filled with rhymes and observations. Without a DJ or producer to provide a beat, he industriously started creating his own using a beat machine given as a present by his mother. From then on J. Cole was constantly creating new music and lyrics leading to his current and flow. ( J. Cole Info taken from - www.jcolemusic.com)

Review: KRS One and Bumpy Knuckles | Royalty Check Special Guest: G Fella
KRS One and Bumpy Knuckles | Royalty Check
Two of hip-hop's legendary radicals come together for a collaborative album, available May 31, 2011
NEW YORK, May 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- 682 Records -- Bumpy Knuckles (aka Freddie Foxxx) and KRS-One announce that their anticipated project, Royalty Check will be in stores and available at digital retailers Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Royalty Check, distributed by Canada-based 682 Records, combines classic hip-hop sound with rock elements through the use of live instruments and edgy drum patterns.
Royalty Check is the perfect blend of all the qualities fans love and expect from these prolific MCs. With contrasting styles, the socially conscious duo addresses a range of similar issues, each using a very different approach. Bumpy Knuckles' more 'in your face' philosophy is balanced out by KRS-One's signature 'stop the violence' mantra.
The album's first single, Street Poison (Stressed Out), has already been well received. The song materializes feelings that most listeners can relate to given the current climate of society. And this is true of the entire project. Produced entirely by Bumpy Knuckles (with the exception of Stand Up, produced by Minneapolis-native King Karnov), Royalty Check is exactly what devoted hip-hop fans are looking for. Gritty tracks like, HipHop We Love You and Take Ya Time, give way to smooth grooves in Just You and tribute piece, Fight For Love. Royalty Check is a hip-hop lovers' dream, catering to those that love lyrics and the boom-bap sound. "My style has always been centered around how everyone one in my circle can get a fair shake," said Bumpy Knuckles. "So that's what I started writing about – how we can we all get a piece of the pie."
The project was born out of a chance opportunity for Bumpy Knuckles and KRS-One to work face to face in the studio again. In the technology age, where artists primarily collaborate via digital channels, it's not often that two MCs of this caliber have a chance to work closely together and feed off of each others creative energy. "Rarely do artists get in the studio together to do albums anymore," said Bumpy Knuckles of working on the project with KRS-One. "And the music can't be wrong if KRS [-One] is picking the songs he wants to rhyme to."
Pete Rock and Smif n Wessun | Monumental

"Monumental" will have guest appearances such as Raekwon, Styles P., Bun B., Memphis Bleek, Freeway, former Hit Squad member Hurricane G, and more. The album is respectively produced in it's entirety by Pete Rock.
CD Review: Big Sean | Finally Famous
Big Sean: I Do It
Sean Anderson, a.k.a. Big Sean, is the newest artist signed to G.O.O.D. Music/Island Def Jam at the young age of 23. Sean was born in Santa Monica, CA and relocated to the west side of Detroit, MI when he was 2 months old. He was raised by his mother and grandparents, who worked steadfastly to instill in him the principles of hard work and determination.
Sean attended the Detroit Waldorf School, a school of art, from Kindergarten to 8th Grade where he was introduced to a spectrum of art and culture. He later attended Cass Technical High School where he furthered his music career, met life long friends, and gained the support of fans and peers as he independently sold copies of his music.
G.O.O.D Music
Sean gained a strong relationship with 102.7FM, a local radio station in Detroit where he displayed his rhyming skills weekly. There, he met Kanye West after a radio interview in 2005 and got a chance to display his talent by freestyling for Mr. West, giving him a copy of his music and sending numerous tracks for him to critique. After months of submitting songs and numerous meetings, Sean finally got the call from Kanye West himself saying that he wanted to sign him. Big Sean officially signed to G.O.O.D Music in 2007 and then signed to Island Def Jam in 2008.
The Debut Album
Big Sean released his debut album entitled “Finally Famous” in June 28, 2011. The album features Hip Hop stars such as ten-time Grammy Award-winning artist Kanye West, Pharrell, The Dream, and many more. “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay“, a song from his debut album featuring Kanye West, gained international recognition after trending worldwide on Twitter in June 2011. Soon after its release, Sean’s collaboration with Chris Brown, “My Last” reached number 1 on the Billboard Hip Hop charts.
CD Review: Random Axe new release Random Axe
This review is for the true hip hop heads. The group Random Axe brings together Hip Hop producer Black Milk and MC's Sean Price, and Guilty Simpson.
On describing 'Random Axe' Guilty Simpson states " it's a union of families from two different cities (Detroit to Brooklyn). "Run," from my album, was the first sample of where the music is going but just a small dosage of what the whole album has to offer. It's not a record made to divide, nor ignore the accomplishments made by Sean Price and Heltah Skeltah. It's two families merging to make incredible Hip Hop records."
CD Review:Bad meets Evil's (Eminem & Royce 5'9) | Hell The Sequel
Bad meets Evil (Eminem & Royce 5'9) | Hell The Sequel
Bad Meets Evil is an American hip hop duo from Detroit, Michigan that consists of rappers Royce da 5'9" and Eminem. They are best known for collaborating on a self-titled song that appeared on Eminem's major-label debut album The Slim Shady LP in 1999 and their early association with Dr. Dre and his label Aftermath Entertainment.
The duo recorded numerous well received underground songs including the popular song "Renegade" which would later be used on Jay-Z's The Blueprint album with Royce's verses replaced by Jay-Z. They have also recorded numerous freestyles together, including a 12-minute long battle. Footage of a Bad Meets Evil concert filmed in September 1998 in Boston at the Lyricist Lounge has also been leaked onto the internet.
Bad Meets Evil split up in early 2000s, after Royce fell out with Eminem's group, D12. They have since reunited and released their EP Hell: The Sequel on June 14, 2011.
CD Review: Kool G Rap | Riches, Royalty and Respect
The Legendary Kool G Rap is our Special Guest Tonight, LIVE In the Cipher!
As part of the golden age MC-and-DJ tandem Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, the "Kool Genius of Rap" enjoyed a successful and, above all, influential run during the late '80s and early '90s before embarking on a fitful solo career. Read More...
Kool G Rap | Riches, Royalty and Respect
More than twenty years after his debut alongside DJ Polo, Kool G Rap is out to prove that he’s aged gracefully. By staying in his comfort zone, one of the originators of rap’s Mafioso sub-genre uses Riches, Royalty & Respect—his fifth solo album (eighth overall)—to again demonstrate this.
For the most part, the Queens native relies on his signature style, where he shines, weaving yarns about illicit scenarios that often include shady vixens looking for a come up. “Should have known better than to fuck with a chicken head/Should have just came for the brain like Return of the Living Dead,” he spits on “Pillow Talk.”
Though the album includes beats from Alchemist (“America’s Nightmare” featuring Havoc) and old Juice Crew buddy Marley Marl (“Money Over Bitches”), a lack of star-level production hinders the release a bit. Even so, a legion of lesser-known beatsmiths build a capable enough backdrop to showcase G Rap’s New York grittiness. On “70’s Gangsta,” Leaf Dog crafts swelling horns for Giancana to kick a flow that reveals what he’d sound like if he were a Blaxploitation-era rap hero, while “Pages of My Life” finds DJ Supa Dave cooking up crisp drums for G Rap’s autobiographical bars.
Sure, there’s no radio-friendly material to fit the current cookie-cutter format, but that was never G Rap’s forte. Riches, Royalty & Respect will appeal his fanbase, as it reinforces that the impeccable rhyme skills that propelled the Kool Genius to rap reverence have not diminished over time. —Alvin Blanco for XXL
